Fornudden School in Tyresö

Fornudden, Tyresö

Lightweight Campus Construction on Soft Clay

Fornudden School in Tyresö was redeveloped into a modern educational campus featuring a new school building, sports hall and upgraded surrounding infrastructure. Because the site consisted of soft clay with poor load-bearing capacity, a lightweight fill solution was required to meet the elevated foundation levels while preventing excessive settlement. Approximately 11,000 m³ of Foamit foam glass was used throughout the project to compensate for the additional loads and provide a stable foundation.

The project was developed by the Property Department of the Municipality of Tyresö on behalf of the Municipality’s Department of Education, with NCC Building Sweden serving as the main contractor. In addition to the school and sports hall, the project included roads, pedestrian and cycle paths, green spaces and utility corridors. Following geotechnical investigations, lightweight fill was identified as the only suitable solution for the challenging ground conditions. After evaluating different alternatives, Foamit foam glass was selected for its low density, ease of installation and proven geotechnical performance.

Foamit foam glass was installed in multiple layers beneath buildings, roads and landscaped areas to compensate for loads without overloading the underlying clay. The material was easy to place and compact, allowing efficient construction while maintaining the required stability. Contractors also highlighted the flexibility of working with foam glass in different levels and sections, making it well suited for the complex site layout and extensive utility installations.

The new Fornudden School was designed with a strong focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, including a large solar power installation and low-energy building design. By combining lightweight construction with recycled foam glass, the project achieved both long-term ground stability and reduced environmental impact, demonstrating the value of circular materials in modern public infrastructure.

A completely new experience for me, and an exciting material that has been a lot of fun to get to know better. Everything has worked very well and the collaboration with Foamit has been flawless.
